AMERICAN IDOL XV VOTING FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I vote?

  1. SuperVote® Online at www.americanidol.com/vote: If you already have a valid Facebook account, you can vote online at www.americanidol.com/vote after logging in with your Facebook account.  If you do not already have a Facebook account, you will need to create one before being able to vote through this method (see How do I vote using SuperVote® Online for more details).  Viewers will be able to submit up to 10 votes per contestant per valid Facebook account per Voting Show.  The vote limit for SuperVote® Online will be calculated separately from any votes you submit using SuperVote® on the FOX NOW® App

    1. Download the FOX NOW® App from the App StoreSM or Google PlayTM Store.  Data rates may apply for App download.
    2. 3. Google Search Voting: If you have a valid Google account, you can vote using Google Search. Simply go to Google, and search “American Idol Vote” or “Idol Vote.” This search will prompt the Google Voting Module to appear with the images of the contestant. To be able to submit vote(s), you must be logged in to the module with a valid Google account.  If you do not already have a Google account, you will need to create one before being able to vote using Google Search. To vote you may select the contestant(s) you wish to vote for and submit no more than 10 votes per contestant per Google account ID per Voting Show.
  4. Text Voting: When voting begins for all of the contestants, they will each be assigned a text message “keyword” number which will appear on screen during the Voting Show each week alongside the short code 21523. Text Voting for AMERICAN IDOL XV is open to all participating wireless cell phone service providers; for a complete list of participating carriers, see Text Voting Terms and Conditions. Customers of participating wireless service providers may text the keyword number relating to the contestant of choice, and send it to the 5 digit short code 21523 (e.g. Text 1 to 21523 or Text 2 to 21523). Text Voting is limited to 10 votes per contestant per originating phone number, per Voting Show. The Text Voting Terms and Conditions can be found at www.americanidol.com/voting-mobileterms. Data or message rates may apply.
  5. Toll-free Voting:  When voting begins for all the contestants, they will each be assigned a toll-free number during the Voting Show each week. To vote, simply watch AMERICAN IDOL XV on FOX each week (see local listings for dates/times in your area) and dial the toll-free telephone number of the contestant(s) for whom you wish to vote.  Toll-free Voting is limited to 10 votes per contestant per originating phone number, per Voting Show. Any votes above 10 per contestant will not count even though you will continue to hear the ‘thanks for voting’ message.

(3) Google Search Voting: If you are using Google Search Voting, you will receive a ‘thanks for voting’ confirmation message page after your vote(s) are successfully cast.  Only your first 10 votes per contestant per Voting Show will count.  Note, if you cast votes during or after the East Coast broadcast for a contestant who is eliminated at the end of the Voting Show, any votes cast for them will not be counted as valid.

(4) Text Voting:  If you are voting by text message, your vote(s) will count if you receive one ‘thanks for voting’ confirmation message for each contestant you have text voted for during the voting window of each Vote Show, regardless of how many times you vote for a contestant.  This message may take some time to be received.  Your text vote was not sent successfully if your handset reads ‘message not sent’.  Note, if you cast votes during or after the East Coast broadcast for a contestant who is eliminated at the end of the Voting Show, any votes cast for them will not be counted as valid.

(5) Toll-free Voting: If you are calling the toll-free numbers to cast your vote, your votes will count the first 10 times you hear the ‘thanks for voting’ message per contestant still up for the public vote.  After 10 votes per contestant, you will still hear the ‘thanks for voting’ message but your votes will not be counted as valid.  Note, if you cast votes during or after the East Coast broadcast for a contestant who is eliminated at the end of the Voting Show, any votes cast for them will not be counted as valid.

If you are experiencing trouble with any of the voting methods, remember that you can always try another voting method.

How do I find out the results?
Eliminations based on the previous weeks’ voting will be revealed in the following week’s episode (see local listings for dates/times in your area).  Make sure you don’t miss a single minute of AMERICAN IDOL XV each week if you want to see how your vote affected the results and to then vote again!

Is it true that some people can cast votes outside of the voting window?
No, this is not true. As part of the process to ensure that AMERICAN IDOL XV voting system is accurate and ready for the public to vote, windows are built into the all vote systems at various times outside of active vote windows.  This voting window is for testing purposes only and any votes received outside of the valid voting windows after each episode do not count as valid votes.

Can I vote by using my cell phone?
Yes, you can vote using your cell phone via the Toll-free and Text Voting methods.  Cell minutes will be used even though the call is toll-free.  Contact your wireless carrier if you want to know how much you will be charged.  If you are a wireless customer from a participating carrier you can vote using text messaging. Standard message and data rates may apply for messages sent and received.  Only send the keyword number (i.e., the number assigned to each contestant) of the contestant that you wish to vote for to the 5 digit short code 21523, as you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers (e.g. Text 1 to 21523 or Text 2 to 21523).

If you are calling or text voting from a cell phone and you are in a different time zone from your cell phone number, the voting systems will accept or reject your vote based on the time zone of your cell phone area code.  For example, if your cell phone number has a New York area code but you are calling from Los Angeles after the West Coast broadcast, you will be voting outside the East Coast voting window and your vote will not be accepted.  Try calling again from a landline telephone during the West Coast voting window.

For more information on Text Voting, please read the SMS Terms and Conditions located at www.americanidol.com/voting-mobileterms

In addition, if you have a compatible handheld device, you can vote on your phone’s browser and SuperVote® via www.americanidol.com/vote or the FOX NOW® App or via Google Search Voting.

I am having trouble getting through on the toll-free lines.  I am getting a busy signal when I call – why?
Although the voting system is designed to handle huge volumes of calls simultaneously, there may be times when it will not be able to handle every single call due to the sheer volume.  If you are calling during your voting window but can’t get through to cast your vote, be patient and try again.

If you hear a busy signal, it may be that you are calling outside of the voting window or calling a number for a contestant who is no longer up for public vote.  When your voting window closes, lines will switch from a ‘thank you for voting’ message to a busy signal, and when contestants are eliminated their numbers will be set to a busy signal.

If you are sure you are calling within your voting window but still can’t get through, it may be that your local phone company has been flooded with calls.  Try waiting a few minutes before calling again.  If you still have problems, contact your local phone company.

If you are calling from a cell phone number with an area code that is in a different time zone from that in which you are calling, the system will accept or reject your vote based on the time zone of the area code of your cell phone number.  For example, if you have a cell phone number with a New York area code but are calling from Los Angeles, you will be voting outside the East Coast voting window and your vote will not be accepted.  Try calling again from a land line telephone during the West Coast voting window.

If you are experiencing trouble with any of the voting methods, remember that you can always try another voting method.

Can I vote if I subscribe to a digital phone service or VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) service?

Yes, you can vote via the toll-free lines if you subscribe to some digital or internet-based phone systems, such as Vonage or Skype. However, digital phone and VOIP services often re-route outgoing calls to a different geographical location from which the call is being made. As a result, you may only be able to vote via Toll-free Voting in the voting window of the location from which your call has been re-routed. If you are trying to vote via Toll-free Voting in the voting window for your region and your call is re-routed outside of your region by your service provider, you will not be able to vote for Toll-free Voting (instead, you will hear a busy signal). However, you still have the availability to vote using any other voting method during the voting window. For further information, contact your digital phone or VOIP service provider.

What will I hear if I call the Toll-free numbers?

Toll-free Voting begins at the start of the Voting Show and remains open for 2 hours after the Show, subject to local time zone restrictions.  During the voting window, you will hear a pre-recorded message thanking you for voting for your chosen contestant number.  Each contestant will have a number read/shown on air, and the phone message will confirm the contestant number for whom you have voted.  Only your first 10 votes per contestant per originating number per Vote Show will count.  If you call more than 10 times per contestant, you will continue to hear the ‘thanks for voting’ message but your vote attempts will not be counted as valid.  Additionally, if you vote for a contestant who is eliminated during the Voting Show, any votes cast for that contestant will not be counted as valid.  After the voting window closes, no more votes will be accepted and lines will play out a busy signal.

When I called, I was told to call a “900” number – isn’t AMERICAN IDOL XV” voting toll-free?

If you call to vote for your favorite AMERICAN IDOL XV contestant and hear a message to call a "900" number, or if you hear anything other than ‘thanks for voting’, you have misdialled.  Do not call this "900" number to vote as "900" numbers are not connected to AMERICAN IDOL XV voting.  Please try AMERICAN IDOL XV toll-free numbers again, making sure to dial the correct numbers carefully.

When I called one of the toll-free lines, I heard the wrong contestant number – why?

All lines for AMERICAN IDOL XV are tested before going on-air to make sure the lines work properly and are playing out the correct audio.  If you call and hear the wrong contestant number, it’s possible you accidentally misdialed, so check the number and dial again.  However, it should be noted that votes are always counted as dialed, regardless of the audio heard.

Why can't I vote by the toll-free numbers using a payphone?

Votes from payphones will be blocked.  To vote for your favorite contestant(s), use a standard land line telephone or cell phone.  If you use a cell phone to call, airtime and applicable roaming and long distance charges will apply.

When I called the toll-free numbers my call records show my call as “canceled” – why?

There are a few reasons why your phone logs may show your calls as “canceled,” after calling the Toll-free Voting lines for AMERICAN IDOL XVThe most common cause is as follows: If you are calling outside of your valid regional voting window, the system is set up to reject such calls, rather than play an audio message. So a caller might hear either a busy signal or silence.  Some phones, such as iPhones, will show these calls as “canceled.” However, that does not mean there is an issue with the system, as that is how it is designed to work.

Another cause may be carrier congestion. During times of high-volume calling, the local system might need to reject your call to protect itself from call surges that could shut down the system.  This call rejection is controlled by the phone carriers. If you are sure you are calling within your valid regional vote window, please be patient and try again.

If you hear the “Thanks for voting” message, your first 10 votes per valid/active contestant will count, even if your phone shows the call as “canceled.”

Voting by text messaging on your cell phone - What is text messaging/SMS?

Text messaging – sometimes known as SMS (short messaging service) - is a way of communicating short text messages via your cell phone.  Most (but not all) handsets have this feature.  For AMERICAN IDOL XV, only customers of the following wireless carriers with area codes from within the Continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the U.S., Virgin Islands can text their vote:  AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, Nextel, Boost, Alltel, U.S. Cellular, Virgin Mobile, Dobson, Cincinnati Bell, Cellular South, NTELOS, CellCom, Carolina West, Bluegrass Cellular, Cellular One, Centennial Communications, EKN, GCI Comms, Illinois Valley Cellular, Immix, Inland Cellular, Nex-Tech, Revol, United Wireless and West Central Wireless.  Wireless subscribers can vote by text message using their cell phone keypad to write a new message containing the keyword number (i.e. the number assigned to each contestant) for the contestant for whom you wish to vote, and then sending it to the 5 digit short code 21523 (e.g. Text 1 to 21523 or Text 2 to 21523).  Only send the keyword number of the contestant that you see on-screen in the Voting Show to the short code, as you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers. To get help with voting by text messaging, send the keyword HELP to 21523.  For full mobile terms relating to AMERICAN IDOL XV Text Voting go to www.americanidol.com/voting-mobileterms

How do I text my vote using a cell phone?

Each contestant will be assigned a keyword number which will appear on screen during the Voting Show.  To vote, simply start a new message containing the keyword number of the contestant for whom you wish to vote and send it to the 5 digit short code 21523 (e.g. Text 1 to 21523 or Text 2 to 21523).  Only send the number of the contestant that you see on screen to the short code, as you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers. If done correctly, you will receive a message confirming your first valid vote per contestant during the voting window that Voting Show, regardless of how many votes you cast. Your carrier’s standard message and data rates may apply to messages sent and received, including any attempts outside of the voting window or attempts over the 10 vote per contestant limit.  Votes sent over the 10 vote per contestant limit will receive an ‘exceed limit’ message.  Votes sent outside of the voting window will be invalid, and you will receive a message stating voting is closed in your region.  If you are sending your text vote from a cell phone number with an area code that is in a different time zone from that in which you are texting, the network will accept or reject your vote based on the time zone of your telephone area code.  So, if you have a cell phone number with a New York area code but you are voting from Los Angeles during the West Coast voting window, your vote will not be accepted.  Try calling the toll-free number from a land line during the West Coast voting window instead, or vote using any other method.  To get help with voting by text messaging, send the keyword HELP to 21523.

Is the text messaging vote system the same as the toll-free system?
The design of the Text Voting system is exactly the same as the Toll-free Voting system in terms of open/close times and regions. Please make sure you watch the complete show to find out the right keywords for each contestant or go to http://a2.votenow.tv/ during the voting window for details of keywords per contestant.

Who can text their vote?  Who are the participating wireless carriers?
For AMERICAN IDOL XV, customers of the following wireless carriers with phone area codes within the Continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands can text their vote:  AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, Nextel, Boost, Alltel, U.S. Cellular, Virgin Mobile, Dobson, Cincinnati Bell, Cellular South, NTELOS, CellCom, Carolina West, Bluegrass Cellular, Cellular One, Centennial Communications, EKN, GCI Comms, Illinois Valley Cellular, Immix, Inland Cellular, Nex-Tech, Revol, United Wireless and West Central Wireless.  Subscribers must have a handset with two-way text messaging capability and have area codes from within the Continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.  For additional Text Voting Terms and Conditions go to www.americanidol.com/voting-mobileterms

Can I send multiple votes in a single message?

When texting your vote, you should send only one vote at a time. If you do not receive a ‘thanks for voting’ confirmation message (one per contestant you vote for, per Voting Show) then your vote will not count and you should try again by sending a single vote at a time within the valid voting window.  You may vote up to 10 times per contestant, per Voting Show.

When I tried to vote, my handset said 'message not sent' - why?

Like the Toll-free Voting, the text messaging system is designed to handle huge volumes of votes simultaneously.  In the unlikely event that congestion is experienced, the notice ‘message not sent’ may appear on your handset.  Please be patient and try again later.  And, remember to vote within your time zone’s voting window!  If you are not a wireless customer, you will not be able to text message your vote for AMERICAN IDOL XV.  Call the Toll-free numbers, SuperVote® Online at www.americanidol.com/vote or on the FOX NOW® App or via Google Search Voting.

What if I can’t remember the toll-free phone numbers and SMS key words to vote for my favorite contestant each week?

I’m seeing the ‘vote closed’ page during the active voting window at www.americanidol.com/vote – why?

If you’re sure you are trying to vote online during the active voting window but you’re seeing the ‘closed’ page, please clear your browser cache and then refresh your page.

I am having trouble voting via SuperVote® at www.americanidol.com/vote and via the FOX NOW® App – why?

Although the Internet can handle huge volumes of vote submissions simultaneously, there may be times when your local service provider (or wireless carrier if on a mobile device) may not be able to handle every attempt due to the sheer volume.  If you are trying to vote during the voting window but it isn’t processing your attempt, make sure you have pop ups enabled via your browser’s or device’s settings (i.e. turn off pop up blocker), clear your history/cache and try again.  If that is not the issue, check your wireless connection as that is the most common cause of vote submission issues.  Please be patient and try again or you can always vote using another vote method instead.

I am unable to submit my votes via SuperVote® at www.americanidol.com/vote and on the FOX NOW® App – why?

If you are voting during the voting window and all you see is the ‘submitting votes, please wait’ page, it is likely that you have pop up blockers enabled on your device or browser.  If you experience this issue, change your browser’s or device’s settings to enable pop ups, then clear your history/cache and try again.  If you still encounter issues, then you can always vote using another vote method instead.

When I select a contestant from the grid to assign my votes, it displays votes already populated. Why?

On some devices, when selecting a contestant from the grid using SuperVote®, you may see votes already populated for some contestants when the vote allocation modal appears (i.e., the page where you add or subtract votes for a contestant).  This relates to the sensitivity of the system and, depending where you click/touch on the grid, the system may allocate votes to that contestant depending on position of your finger when clicking.  If this occurs and it is not the amount of votes you wish to allocate, simply adjust the votes (adding or subtracting) to your liking using the + or – buttons or using the circular swipe motion around the image.  Then select ‘done’ and proceed with voting for more contestants or selecting ‘submit’ to proceed with the voting process.

I am having issues with some vote buttons using a Touch Screen device. Why?

Some touch screen devices (e.g., Windows 8 Touch Screen computers) may experience sensitivity issues when navigating around the SuperVote® experience.  There may be times when the mouse works but the touch screen does not, and vice versa.  This may be due to the browser being used.  If you experience this issue and cannot proceed to complete your vote submission, please try another device or voting method.

Why am I getting a ‘page does not exist’ or ‘online voting not currently available in your location’ error page when trying to vote using SuperVote® Online at www.americanidol.com/vote and via the FOX NOW® App from within the U.S.?

If you are trying to vote from within the U.S. but see an AMERICAN IDOL XV page which says ‘The page you are looking for does not exist’ or ‘Online voting is not currently available in your location’, it may be that your connection to the internet is being routed via a region not in the U.S.  This may be caused by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) experiencing local level congestion during peak times and therefore load balancing the traffic via a less congested region, which could be located outside of the U.S.  If you feel you have reached this page in error, please clear your browser’s cache and then refresh the page.  If the problem persists, please be patient and try again later, or use another method to cast your vote.

How do I vote using Google Search?
Voting using Google Search is available to Google account holders located within the Continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  During the active Vote Window simply go to Google and search “American Idol Vote” or “Idol Vote” and you will see a voting module with the images of all the contestants up for vote that Voting Show.  To submit votes, you must be logged in with a valid Google account.  If you do not already have a Google account, you will need to create one before being able to vote using Google Search.  To vote, select the image of the contestant for whom you wish to vote and you will be presented with a page showing the contestant image and a slider so that you can add votes.  You may allocate up to 10 votes per contestant, per Voting Show, per Google account.  Once you have allocated how many votes you wish to for that contestant, select the ‘continue’ button.  You will then be taken back to the grid with all the contestants.  You may vote for as many or as few contestants as you wish.  Once you have allocated votes and are ready to submit, select the ‘Submit Votes To American Idol’ button.  If successful, you will be taken to a page confirming that your votes were submitted. From there, you may select to (1) ‘Continue voting’, (2) Share on Google+’, (3) ‘Share on Twitter’ (4) ‘Share on Facebook’ or (5) view some of the American Idol content links on the page.
