Dunk and Seacrest introduced the judges as the show began, with many a sarcastic remark being exchanged. Dunk told Simon that he saw him on "The View" and couldn't even tell which one was him! Oh snap! That one will go down in the Snarky Remarks Hall of Fame.
Ryan then informed us about some drama in the AI world, with contestant Delano being disqualified due to lying about his age. The most entertaining part about the whole interaction was, when asked about his real age, he stuck by his initial answer of "23." But then he qualified it by saying, "That's the age that I am for this competition!" Well, people, if we're playing that game, I am 23 as well. That's the age that I am going to be for this year.
Due to the dramatic exit, Ejay Day was asked to be at the competition within the following 24 hours. To boot, they lost his luggage! But he ultimately made it.
RJ Helton started off the singing with "I'll Be There." His performance incited more drama and, this time, it was from the judges. While Randy and Paula enjoyed his performance, Simon called it "average" and added that they have to get the competition "back on track." He went on to say that two "losers" have been put through due to the sympathy vote and he is fed up. Well, this bit of criticism did not sit well with Randy, who immediately told Simon that this is America and you can't just call people losers. I'm guessing that Britain is probably not fond of the word, either, but maybe they are a bit cheekier over there. Simon retorted by calling that "American rubbish" but made sure to say that this tirade wasn't directed at RJ, who looked as though he'd swallowed glass by that point. Needless to say, the red room was up in arms about the big fight, with Dunk calling it "celebrity boxing." RJ calmly replied, "It was coolÉI know Randy would have won anyway." I'd say the clear winner there was RJ.
Kristin Holt was next. Paula called her performance a little "disengaged" but still good. Randy was quite a bit tougher on her, saying that they are trying to find the best and that her performance wasn't even close. Simon said that if it was a beauty competition, she'd definitely win. He then added the one-two-three punch by saying that it wasn't good enough, it was the wrong song choice, and that she is out of her league. Ouch.
Crying in the red room afterwards, Kristin said, "At least he didn't call me a loser." Way to look at the bright side, Kristin.
Mark Scott sang "My Girl" next. Paula said that she loved his voice but didn't care for the song choice. Randy said, "It wasn't good tonight." Simon said that he, too, didn't think it was good enough. And then he turned his formerly-Randy Jackson-directed rage at the red room, asking Dunk and Seacrest, "What do you know about judging a talent competition? Nothing!" Wow, apparently someone gave Simon two sugars in his coffee instead of one. He was on a roll like I'd never seen before.
Nikki McKibbin performed "Eclipse of the Heart" next. She must have been singing her heart out, as her tongue stud was very visually apparent during the whole song. Randy told her, "You did your thing, man." He complimented her look and consistency, but said that she did run "out of gas" at the end. Paula said that she's always admired that she "marches to the beat of her own drummer." She said that she loves her voice but felt that she shouted certain parts of the song. Simon surprisingly agreed with Paula on the shouting factor, but said that she is one of the "strongest contestants in the competition." He went so far as to say, "I hope you do really well because I think you deserve to." And the show has come full circle already.
Christopher Badano stepped up on stage to sing "I Swear" next and I could have sworn that the kid was twelve. He must use Oil of Olay. Paula said that she could see his nerves at the beginning but he came through at the end. Randy asked him where his energy went, and called the performance "really, really bad." Simon called him a "good looking boy" that young girls will love, but told him that his voice is average. He said that he agreed with Randy that his energy was what he liked and even went so far as to say, "You sold out!"
Rewind checked in with Melanie Sanders next, who said that she was making sure to wear a long skirt this time, as she felt that Paula got a little bit jealous of her legs during auditions. I can only hope that was sarcasm.
She sang "And I'm Telling You, I'm Not Going." Randy said that she was really good and that it was a tough song. Paula said that she did a great job. Simon said that, while she is beautiful, he can't help but think Cabaret when he hears her. Melanie was quick to ask, "Like strip club Cabaret?" Dunk only took it to another level of creepy in the red room by telling her, "Girl, you've got legs that go all the way up!" They usually do, Dunk. They usually do.
Ejay Day, fresh off the airplane, was next. He talked about the irony of the fact that he sang "Get Here" in his first audition in Pasadena. This night, he sang "I'll Be." He got a standing ovation from the red room. Simon said that no one has sung better than that today. He even called it "brilliant!" Paula said that he'd blown everyone else away. Randy said, "I didn't even know you had that vocal range." I'm guessing his lost luggage at that point became pretty small potatoes.
Tanesha Ross sang "Until You Come Back to Me" next. She used a lot of hand choreography, if that makes any sense. Paula called her voice "pure and beautiful" but said that she put a little too much in there riffing around. Randy said that she just never found the note. Simon said that she didn't shine like a star and that there are better people. In the red room, Tanesha tearfully explained the difficulty of following such a "great performance."
Khaleef Chiles sang "My Cherie Amour" and didn't quite "wow" the judges as much as he did with that song during auditions. Randy Jackson told him that he looked "petrified" and that it was just an okay performance. Paula liked that he took the song and made it his. Simon agreed with Randy but then gave him a completely left-handed compliment by saying that he is someone that only thinks about him and that he hopes that he wins the competition. What!?
Christina Christian closed out the night with "At Last." Paula told her that she has such star presence and that the camera loves her. Randy agreed with Paula, saying that it was an interesting arrangement and a tough song, but that it was good. Simon said that after the bland performances tonight, "Thank God for you." He called her performance "fantastic."
Idol Rewind checked in with some of the Idols to find out what that waiting period was like for them. Melanie Sanders said that, going into the results show, she felt like she had a shot. Khaleef said he was very anxious to get the results.
Results Night was next, and Ryan first reminded us that next week would be the pick of the wild card contestant. We were reminded of who had made it into the finals thus far: Justin, Kelly, AJ, Tamyra, Ryan, and Jim. The first winner of the night was Christina Christian. Simon said that they got this one "100% right." Randy agreed.
Nikki McKibbin was the next one to move on. Simon said that she has originality and has been growing throughout the competition. Paula said she has a great spirit about her. Randy told her, "You're different and definitely a star."
Next Dunk and Seacrest brought out the rest of the Top 10. And then the final person of the night was announced, which was a very shocked Ejay Day. He called it a blessing. As Dunk said, fate definitely had to have something to do with it. The show didn't quite end on Ejay's high note, however. Ryan asked Simon to name the two afore-mentioned "losers!" Simon, not one to usually back down, surprisingly said, "Maybe Ôlosers' was the wrong term." But apparently it wasn't wrong enough to have them remain nameless; as he followed that by saying that it was AJ Gil and Jim Verraros. In an attempt to not be seen as a complete tyrant, he told them both, "Prove me wrong."
Rewind then checked in with some of the Idols regarding the results. Christina said that the biggest shock was being chosen first. Ejay said that making it into the Top 10 and knowing that he had the appreciation of America meant the world to him.
