Only five finalists were left for Frank Sinatra Week. Time is flying! Guest mentor Harry Connick Jr. helped Ryan introduce the show and he got the dramatic pause between "THIS" and "is American Idol" down. The man has done it all; he's a singer, musician, actor, Grammy winner at age 22, and we learned by the end of the night that he's an all around nice and funny guy. His goal is not only to mentor the Idols, but to help them interpret the songs of the original idol, Frank Sinatra. And since he's a triple threat, he'll be dancing. Oh wait, no, but he'll be composing the songs and playing the piano along with members of his band. And like Sinatra, Harry has beautiful blue eyes.
Frank Sinatra's daughters were in the audience, and they brought a monogrammed hanky for Simon as a goodbye gift. The gift moved Simon, and he almost needed to use that hanky to dab his eyes, but he held it together.
When Harry met Aaron, it was less dramatic than when Harry met Sally. The hilarious HCJ said "Hey, Big Mike!" as Aaron entered the room. Aaron looked comfortable as he sat at the piano with Harry, who taught him about notes and tone. He summed up Aaron as a sweet kid with a sweet voice. The teen kicked off the night with "Fly Me To The Moon." Do you think he even knew who Sinatra was? Aaron was just a tot when Frank passed away. He looked dapper tonight and ditched his jacket with jeans uniform for a vest, dress shirt, and pants. You gotta keep it classy for Frank! Randy Jackson said he was worried about whether young Aaron would struggle with Frank Sinatra songs, but he thought his puppy dawg really pulled it off. Kara wanted to see more charisma from Aaron, and said he needed to fill up the stage more. "Frank was as tall as you but he filled it up," she stated. Aaron was back to feeling tall when Ryan greeted him to read off the voting numbers.
Back from commercial break, Harry was up in Casey's face telling him "Don't screw it up!" Casey, who hasn't had a TV since lightening struck his at age 7, just received a call from a pal who was wondering if he'd be able to play a gig tonight for $50 and a free meal. Clearly, Casey isn't the only kid in Cool without a TV. I have a feeling the days of $50 and free food for Casey are behind him. When Casey met with Harry, he said his nerves were eased because of Harry's jokes. Maybe Harry just helped Casey's nerves tonight by yelling at him to not screw up minutes before taking the stage. Casey sang "Blue Skies" by Ol' Blue Eyes, and for the first time in the competition, he didn't play his guitar! Although Casey promissed he'd play the guitar each week, it was wise for him to not try and compete with Harry Connick Jr.'s big band. Casey resisted the urge to shred on an air guitar and held the microphone and some long notes with lots of vibrato. The judges thought this was probably his worst performance because he was stiff, out of his element, and had too much vibrato. Harry said he was better in rehearsal, but that's not going to help him now.
The last woman standing, Crystal Bowersox, met with Harry to work on "Summer Wind," which she said she's singing for "personal reasons." Interesting...I have a feeling it relates back to her love for her boyfriend. In fact, tonight I noticed a ring on Crystal's left finger, but I'm not sure if that's because her Shania Twain hint affected him or just coincidence. Harry likes the obscurity of the relation Crystal has with the song, and Crystal said this is a different type of singing for her. She started her live performance next to Harry and then made her way to the microphone. Crystal was wearing an elegant evening gown (which exposes her less elegant large sunflower back tatt) and a nice upswept 'do. For her second time in the competition, Crystal performed without an instrument. Like her Shania Twain performance last week, the judges liked her performance this week but didn't love it like they normally do. Randy thought Crystal's performance was a little sleepy, Ellen felt like the singer was swallowing her words, Kara liked her phrasing, but Simon thought it was like an indulgent, overly jazzy performance. The girls on this show are good at politely standing up for themselves, and Crystal said it's a love song, so of course she's not going to blurt it into her lover's ears.
Michael Lynche was in his element tonight. He got to accessorize with a fedora, a large wallet chain (does he need his wallet when he's on stage?) and Seacrest's pocket square. Big Mike and Ryan are dressed nearly identical tonight. They should star in a remake of the movie "Twins." Mike is taking on a popular Frank Sinatra song, "The Way You Look Tonight." Harry encouraged him to connect by having Mike picture that he's singing it to his wife, and that seemed to do the trick. Mike only sang the first word and you could already feel more meaning behind it. After a solid performance on the Idol stage, Randy said that Michael threw down the gauntlet tonight, Ellen commented that he has the most stage presence of the group, Kara liked that he took us on a journey without getting lost, and Simon thought Michael changed up the night and "put the ball back in the game," which seems to be a mixed metaphor. Either way, it seems that the judges are glad they used the save on Michael!
Lee DeWyze was the last performer of the night. When he met with Harry, we learned that HCJ's wife finds Lee to be good looking, and she's not alone. Harry said Lee reminds him of a younger version of himself, and then stated, "I'm not saying your hot..." Harry jokes a lot with Lee, especially as they say goodbye. Lee started his live performance next to the jokester, and then worked the stage. He was more expressive as he sang this week, and he's smiling again! Lee held a long note at the end. Lee went to hug Harry after the performance, and the mentor said, "That's what I'm talking about man, get outta here!" and then Harry shoved Lee. An affection only two guys can show each other. The judges would have praised him with a shove too, if given the opportunity. Ellen said if this were the last night of performances, he would've won the entire thing. Kara gave Lee homework; he has to write "I can with this thing" on the blackboard to gain the confidence he needs to win. Simon gave Harry props for bringing out Lee's personality and confidence. Simon said that Lee gave 110% and that resulted in the best performance of the night.
As everyone stood on stage together at the end of the night, I noticed that Ryan, Mike, Harry, and Lee are dressed identically. I wonder if the judges were jealous of all the snazzy suits on stage. With only 5 finalists left, more than half will be in the bottom. I learned that fraction from The Randy Jackson School of Arithmetic.
