The results show opened with an exciting intro; "Sometimes it's good to go home. [Insert clips of hometown visits and journey on the show]. The two going to the finale are..." OMG, I cannot wait one hour! Ryan Seacrest came out on stage with a huge grin. Does he know something? Apparently he's just happy to have a job...and another one, and another one.
The Top 12 Idol finalists were in the audience behind the judges. Over 47 million votes came in the previous night. I think that's a record this season. On top of it all, it was Simon Cowell's last night at the Idol set. Ryan walked the Top 3 over to the bleachers for a chat. They look so nervous, and I can only imagine how nervous they are since I'm nervous and the results don't change my life forever!
The chat was actually a nice little piece of tonight's show. We got to learn a little more about what goes on in the finalists' heads. Casey never expected to get past the initial stadium auditions, and now here he is in the final three. Crystal said that people at home don't have any idea how much work goes into their Idol days. Lee said the show made him a better person because he learned a lot about himself. The teacher, I mean host, picked on Randy to give his thoughts on the final 3.
After this week's Ford music video, we saw the first of the three hometown visits. How many finalists would cry? Casey James was up first, and we got to see the "Cool" city he's from. Oh the puns that could be had...but I'll spare you. Seas of thousands of people showed up to support their hometown hero. As Casey got off the jet and stepped on Texas soil, he ended every sentence with either "baby" or "home." On the way to his first stop, he talked about how he can't imagine a whole bunch of people coming to see him. His mom was in disbelief when she saw the turn out. Casey went to the hospital where he was treated after his bad car accident. A choked up Casey wrote a message on a guitar and handed it to the doctor who read the emotional message out loud. We ended up seeing many sides of Casey we have never seen before of the normally calm and "Cool" [sorry, couldn't help myself] rocker.
Perez Hilton is in the audience to get the latest Idol gossip firsthand. Oh, actually he's here to promote his finding, pop star Travis Garland, who Perez discovered online and he said he's better than Justin Timberlake. Travis took the stage and entertained with his dance moves as he sang "Believe," but I don't think he can rival J.T. Then again, in my head, no one can rival Timberlake!
Next, we experienced Crystal Bowersox's hometown visit. She was in great spirits and showed so much personality and a sense of humor - playing her harmonica necklace on the jet, popping up and down through the sunroof of the limo to tease the fans, getting stunned by one rabid fan who is tattooing her autograph on his chest, and taking pictures of the fans who were taking pictures of her. Every step of the way we saw her emotional dad by her side. She received the key to the city, witnessed the creation of Crystal Bowersox Day, and played at "Bowerstock." Her original song, "Holy Toledo," was used during her video package. She has been waiting to do original music on the show all season, so this was a great opportunity to introduce her work.
Footage of Lee DeWyze's trip to Chicago and Mount Prospect, Illinois came third. It seemed like a dream come true for the singer who threw out the first pitch at the Cubs game. When he went to his old elementary school, he was faced with hundreds of screaming children. Next, Lee went to his old paint store which was a really emotional experience for him. He can't beLEEve the support and how far he has come. He performed a concert in a packed stadium of BeLEEvers and sang "The Boxer." He became choked up and his parents started crying. Back in the studio, Lee was crying, or at least he had a "Lee DeWyze eye," and said he can't ask for anything more than his parents' support.
Teen sensation, Twitter hero, and BET Award nominee Justin Bieber took the stage and sang "U Smile" and "Baby." There were girls swaying in the audience, and I was glad to see that no one fainted. This kid makes Aaron Kelly look old! At the end of his set, he gave an impressive drum solo. I think his power comes from his hair helmet.
As the butterflies swirled around in my stomach, Kieran dimmed the lights and Ryan gave the big announcement. Competing in the finale is Lee DeWyze! Battling Lee is Crystal Bowersox! She was in disbelief and asked Ryan twice, "I'm safe?" She ran over to Lee and jumped up and wrapped her legs around him. That's something we haven't seen our Top 2 finalists do before! They dueted just last week and now they're going head-to-head.
Casey James took the news like a man and sang "Daughters" and performed without a musical instrument for only the second time on the Idol stage. He showed a lot of charisma as he walked around the audience and shook hands and posed with girls with "I <3 Casey James" posters. I was hoping he'd perform for Kara as he walked past the judges table, but he did give her and Randy a handshake. Then he picked up one young girl, who I assume is his niece, and sang the rest of the song while holding her. Aww. A good singer, a tremendous guitar player, a sensitive guy, and a family man. Oh and good hair. Casey, I don't think you'll be single for long!
So after a few months, it has all come down to this. WHO...will be your next American Idol?!
