After a night of '60s tunes and British pop songs, the American Idol Top 5 is now down to the Top 4.

On Thursday night, Ryan began by calling Joshua to center stage. On the previous night, Joshua performed the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and Steven told him, "You gotta be one of the top two best Idols of all time." Jennifer added, "You're like a throwback from another era, you are so sick!"

For his second song, Joshua chose the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody," even though he'd never heard the song before (he learned it in 15 minutes in rehearsal). "The fact that you never heard it, and you did that to it . . . You are one of the best singers ever on this show!" Randy said. Jennifer added that she thinks Joshua is "one of the best singers we've seen in 50 years."

On Thursday, Jimmy called Joshua's performance a "tough one to beat." And while he described "Ain't to Proud to Beg" as "really just fantastic," he thought that "the sky opened" when Joshua sang "To Love Somebody." Jimmy raved, "As far as I'm concerned this year, that was the best performance on American Idol. Of course, Joshua's safe tonight. Jennifer, Randy, you're right: this kid deserves greatness."

After a nationwide vote, Ryan announced that Joshua was indeed safe.

For the first time ever on Idol, Coldplay took the stage to perform "Paradise." The audience literally glowed, thanks to some colorful battery operated wristbands.

Next, Ryan called Hollie and Phillip to center stage. On Wednesday, Hollie sang Tina Turner's "River Deep – Mountain High," and Jennifer said, "I could feel you attacking the song. It was a different type of Hollie out there tonight." Steven thanked the Lord for the performance, and Randy "loved it," too.

For the Brit pop round, Hollie sang Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love," and Randy noted that while she's been "the dark horse all season," she was "two for two" on Wednesday night.

Jimmy said it was a "critical week" for Hollie. "We all know she needed a game-changer," he said. "I believe she pulled it off. She was the most believable I've seen her on this show yet." On "Bleeding Love," Jimmy thought she did a "competent" job, but overall he predicted she would be safe for the week.

On performance night, Phillip Phillips sang "The Letter" by the Box Tops. Jennifer told him that, although she didn't know the original song, "You're so compelling to watch, I want to start clapping when you're done." Steven had bad news and good news, saying, "Bad news: I miss the melody. Good news: You get away with it." And Randy said, "Maybe it didn't have as much melody in the chorus, but you made it new for me in your jam band-y Phillip Phillips way."

Phillip followed with "Time of the Season" by the Zombies, and Steven thought he sang the melody "really well." Randy called it "more relaxed and subdued."

Jimmy said Phillip should be "commended" for performing despite the way he's feeling right now." But he thought Phillip chose "two very bland songs." "In life you have to be willing to fail in order to really win. I feel Phillip has been coasting. He's gonna have to do something to change that. He should be in the bottom two, but he has so many assets for so many weeks that he probably won't be."

Ryan dimmed the lights . . . Hollie was in the bottom two, and Phillip was safe.

Next, Carrie Underwood (who needs no introduction as one of Idol's most famous alums) performed the title track from her latest album, "Blown Away." Then, Ryan called Skylar and Jessica to center stage.

On Wednesday, Skylar sang Credence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son," and Jennifer admired her spunkiness. "You run out there and give us all this energy, it's amazing! It's like you attack every single song," she said. Randy said Credence would be proud, and pointed out that Skylar was "born to be on the stage."

For her second song, Skylar chose Dusty Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," and Jennifer said with performances like that, she "just might" win the entire competition.

Jimmy agreed with some of the judges' feedback. "She had great energy on 'Fortunate Son,'" he said. Yet he disagreed with Jennifer that it was a performance that could win the entire competition. "Did I believe that? Not at all. It had Nashville, but it had Vegas and Broadway — it was very strange to me. I wasn't thrilled, [but] she doesn't deserve to go home because of that," he said.

Jessica sang "Proud Mary," and Jennifer called it "a little bit of Tina, a little bit of Beyonce." Randy, however, said it was "barely OK for me."

For her second song, Jessica chose Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful," and the judges loved it. "You once showed America just how beautiful your voice is and what a great singer you are. You're gonna be #1, girl!" Steven told her. Randy said Jessica was at "the top of the leader board" after Round 2.

On Thursday, Jimmy said that "You Are So Beautiful" was just that: beautiful. "She took you on a journey with that song," he raved. "It was magnificent." However, he didn't love the Tina song. "I think we all know by now that I think Jessica is technically the best singer in competition, but last night was a travesty. She took on Tina, added Beyonce — that dress was too mature. I believe a lot of people at home last night felt uncomfortable. Hollie's Tina won the night. Jessica's was too racy . . . I think it's gonna hurt her."

After a nationwide vote, Jimmy was wrong: Jessica was safe. Skylar joined Hollie in the bottom two.

The contestants took a break as Coldplay returned to the stage once more, making up for taking 11 seasons to appear on Idol! Their performance of "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" ended in a confetti shower, but unfortunately the celebration was over as it was time for the ultimate results.

After 60 million votes were counted, Ryan announced that the person going home was Skylar. Hollie and Jennifer teared up as "fearless" Skylar said her goodbyes amid a standing ovation.

"I'll take a lot from this experience — friendship, memories," she said in her farewell video. "I'm gonna put this toward my career in the future."
