On Thursday we fo
und out that '80s night didn't turn out to be so awesome for DeAndre Brackensick, as the judges once again chose to not use their one save of the season on a contestant in jeopardy.
But first, Jennifer premiered her new video for "Dance Again," and Ryan jokingly asked her if she had "any special chemistry with any of the dancers." (She laughed it off, saying she was "embarrassed.") The Top 8 also debuted their new Ford video, "Alright."
Then it was time for the results, which were given in the order of Wednesday night's '80s duets. Ryan called Joshua Ledet (who wasn't feeling well) and Jessica Sanchez to center stage.
On Wednesday's performance night, Joshua sang Simply Red's "If You Don't Know Me by Now," and Randy wanted to stand up from beginning to end. He raved, "I think we found someone tonight who's gotta have it!" Jennifer said the judges "asked for a powerhouse performance, and that's what we got."
Jimmy was also impressed with Joshua's performance. "When he started in this contest, he was a little over-affected," Jimmy said. "I talked to him about it, and I think he's reined it in. He's right in his sweet spot: 10s all around."
Jessica sang Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know," and Jennifer couldn't believe the sound that was "coming out of that little body."
Jimmy, however, was mixed on the performance. "Jessica did what Jessica does: She sang beautifully, understood the song completely, but to me that wasn't enough because she's a great singer with a song without enough horsepower," he said. "She needs bigger songs right now."
After a nationwide vote, Ryan revealed that they were both safe! Next, U.K. pop sensation The Wanted performed their #1 hit, "Glad You Came." Then Ryan called Skylar Laine and Colton Dixon to center stage.
On Wednesday Skylar sang "Wind Beneath My Wings," and Randy thought it was her "best performance on the show to date." Jennifer said Skylar told America with that performance, "Do not count me out!"
Tonight Jimmy said he was glad that he, Gwen, and Tony had talked Skylar out of singing "9 to 5," musing that last week, when he described Jessica and Hollie as "power singers," Skylar must have said, "Hey, Jimmy, hang on, I want to prove to you that I'm a power singer as well!" He added, "Last night she proved it to me. She took that great performance and stage presence and combined it with a great vocal with great power and went from bottom right to the top. If she continues this, she could win the whole thing."
Colton sang "Time After Time," and Steven said he "could make a record right now."
Jimmy was less impressed, saying, "Colton was good last night, but not great — certainly not as great as Joshua or Skylar. I feel he came in third or fourth."
Ryan asked Skylar and Colton to hang tight while he called Hollie and DeAndre to center stage.
On Wednesday Hollie sang "What a Feeling," and Steven said that her "pitch was all over the place."
Jimmy also had issues with the performance. "Hollie's problem is she's approaching this like a high school performance, and it wasn't even a great high school performance," he said. "She sang 'What a Feeling,' and we ended up asking ourselves, where's the feeling?" Jimmy predicted that Hollie would be in the bottom three, and she "may be fighting with DeAndre for who's packing."
As for DeAndre, he sang DeBarge's "I Like It," and Jennifer "liked it . . . a lot." Randy and Steven also thought he did a great job, but Jimmy disagreed.
"No, Jennifer, no, Randy, no, Steven! DeAndre was not great," Jimmy said. "DeAndre needs to come out and grow at a much faster pace. If you look at the boys, Joshua is growing leaps and bounds; DeAndre is growing marginally. DeAndre was the weakest of boys last night. He could be going home unless Jennifer, who's been supporting him this entire show, saves him. Jen?"
Jennifer stood by her positive feedback. "His vocal was amazing," she said. Randy agreed. "We loved him last night," he said.
After a nationwide vote, America agreed with Jimmy. DeAndre was in the bottom three. As Ryan put it, time after time, America has loved Colton — he was safe. Then he announced that Hollie was also in the bottom three, while Skylar was safe.
Next, season five finalist Kellie Pickler returned to perform her single, "Where's Tammy Wynette." Then Ryan called Elise and Phillip to center stage.
On Wednesday Phillip sang "That's All," and Jennifer felt that while he wasn't in his "comfort zone" in the beginning, "toward the end he brought it home and was the Phillip we love."
Jimmy felt he was good, but not great. "In my opinion, this was Phillip's worst performance of the entire show," he said. "It's difficult to push yourself when everyone's telling you you're so great."
Elise sang "I Want to Know What Love Is," and Randy felt that she "never quite hit the pitch right." Steven wasn't sure it was the "right song," but Jimmy said it was the right song, just not a very good performance.
"She hit the stage and did not sing it incredible — it's called an old-fashioned choke," Jimmy said. "It could take her from the top right to the bottom."
After a nationwide vote, Elise joined Hollie and DeAndre in the bottom three. Ryan quickly sent Hollie back to the couches, followed by Elise, leaving DeAndre to sing for his life.
DeAndre reprised his performance of Stevie Wonder's "Master Blaster (Jammin')," but the judges decided to not use their one save of the season on him, despite Jennifer's best efforts.
"You're an amazing performer, I stand by that, and I think you have amazing voice and you'll share a lot with the world," Jennifer told DeAndre. "I only get one vote . . . I'm sorry, we're not saving you tonight."
DeAndre seemed to take it in stride. As he said in his farewell video, "American Idol has been and always will be the highlight of my life."
