Another contestant bit the dust on Thursday night, turning the Top 6 into the Top 5 with the Finale less than a month away. Thursday's show was full of amazing performances, including the Queen Extravaganza, Stefano Langone, and Katy Perry, not to mention the Idols' debut of their new Ford video, "Magic." The producers even sent the contestants to TMZ to meet Harvey Levin and the rest of the celebrity gossip website's staff to "thicken their skin."
Ryan announced that 58 million votes had been cast Wednesday — 10 million more than this time last year — and he called Jessica and Elise to center stage to hear the results. But first we looked back at their performances.
For her first song on Wednesday, Jessica sang Queen's 1975 classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," and Steven said, "Freddie Mercury would have been proud to hear that." Jennifer thought it was "beautiful," but wanted a little more "hair-throwing," while Randy said he loved it. For her second song, Jessica picked Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father" in honor of her dad, who is about to be deployed to Singapore, and Jennifer said it "may have been the best I've ever heard that song."
As for Jimmy, he called Jessica's song choice of "Bohemian Rhapsody" a "plain-old mistake," and he was kind of freaked out when three faces of Jessica appeared on the screen. "That was less Queen and more Steven King," he said. However, he thought that the Luther Vandross song was "magnificent," adding that it "not only tugged on her emotional heartstrings but the judges' and audience's as well. That was clever."
Elise sang Queen's "I Want It All," and Steven said she found her stride. Jennifer added, "To me that was you in your element. You look great, you sounded great." For her second song, she chose Jimi Hendrix's "Bold as Love," and Steven wasn't sure about the song choice. "You gotta do songs that people know. You can't pick the cherries with your back to the tree." Jennifer thought she "slayed that song so hard" that the song choice didn't even matter, but Randy agreed with Steven. "You were boxing with the song . . . I didn't love it," he said.
On Thursday, Jimmy agreed with Steven that Elise chose the wrong Queen song. "A monotone stadium anthem comes up clubby," he said. "I felt like I was in a nightclub. It didn't move me." And he thought the second song was all wrong, too. "Great singer, bad choices," he concluded.
After a nationwide vote, Ryan announced that Jessica was in the top three, and Elise was in the bottom three.
The contestants took a break as last year's finalist Stefano Langone showed off his dance moves and performed his catchy new single, "I'm on a Roll." Then Ryan called Hollie and Joshua to center stage.
On performance night, Hollie sang "Save Me," and Jennifer thought it went "off" a little bit when she got emotional in the middle. "I want to see you enjoy it more," she said. Randy urged Hollie to "take more chances" if she wants to have a "moment." For her second song, Hollie chose Miley Cyrus' "The Climb," and Steven said it was "so beautiful." Randy declared that Hollie was "back," shouting: "Yo, now that's the Hollie we love!" And Jennifer said it was "perfect."
Jimmy thought Hollie did a "very good job" on "Save Me" (noting that the song title may have been a subconscious plea to voters), though she "tripped up at the very end." And he loved "The Climb." "Great choice," he said. "I thought she caught the emotion as well as Hollie can do. I hope it's not too little, too late."
Joshua sang "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," and Randy called it "unbelievable." Jennifer admitted that "the Joshua part of the show is my favorite part of the show."
For his second song, Joshua sang India.Arie's "Ready for Love," and Randy was rendered speechless, it was so "beautiful."
On Thursday, Jimmy said he was also really impressed with "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," adding that it proved that Joshua can "cross over to pop." And Jimmy thought that his performance of "Ready for Love" was just as good. "He moved all of us right where he wanted us," Jimmy said. "If he keeps delivering like that, I think it will take him to the finals."
After a nationwide vote, Ryan announced that Joshua was in the top three, and Hollie was in the bottom three.
Next, Katy Perry gave an exciting, military-inspired performance of her latest hit, "Part of Me." Then Ryan called Skylar and Phillip to center stage.
On Wednesday, Skylar sang "The Show Must Go On," and Steven loved her energy and passion. "Oh my God, that was fabulous," he said. Jennifer said she "got goosies" from the "powerful" performance. And Randy was blown away. "This girl right here, she's gotta have it!" he said. For her second song, Skylar chose Jason Aldean's "Tattoos on This Town," and Randy enjoyed it, telling Skylar, "You are fearless, you go after notes. You're like, 'Dude, I'm gonna have fun up here!'"
Jimmy described "The Show Must Go On" as "very, very competent," but he called "Tattoos," which was dedicated to her hometown, "a little self-indulgent" and probably not strong enough to appeal to the entire country. "I don't think that song cut the mustard," he quipped. "The judges felt she won round one; in my opinion, she got knocked out in round two," he added.
Phillip sang "Fat Bottomed Girls," and Randy liked it, but he wasn't "jumping up and down." Steven thought it was "beautiful" and a "great choice." Then after all the Dave Matthews comparisons, Phillip finally sang a Dave Matthews tune, "The Stone," for his second song. Jennifer thought was "a little bit obscure, a little bit too artsy." Randy disagreed with Jennifer, saying he showed his true colors as an artist.
On Thursday, Jimmy pointed out that Phillip hasn't been feeling well, and he thinks it showed on "Fat Bottomed Girls." As for the Dave Matthews song, Jimmy didn't really think it was the right time for that, but mostly enjoyed how it caused disagreement among the judges. "When they agree all the time I fall asleep," he joked. However, he feared the song "left an opening for someone other than Phillip to be in the finale."
After a nationwide vote, Skylar joined Elise and Hollie in the bottom three, meaning Phillip was in the top three. However, Ryan quickly sent Skylar to safety — leaving Elise and Hollie in the bottom two. Then Elise was the last contestant standing.
In Elise's farewell tribute video, she said her favorite part of her Idol journey was connecting with the other contestants. "I want to be an inspiration for people; that's what this is all about," she said. She may be on her way — Stevie Nicks wants to hire her.
