With less than one month to go until the finale, the Top 6 performed some of Queen's greatest hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "The Show Must Go On," and "Fat Bottomed Girls."
So how did the legendary glam rock band manage to sell more than 130 million records? Well, frontman Freddie Mercury (who died in 1991) played a major role, of course, but still rocking-Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor sat down with the Idol contestants to reveal some of the secrets of their success, including, "Keep faith in yourself, and just keep going."
The finalists kept that in mind as they rocked out with Brian and Roger to a medley of Queen's greatest hits, earning a standing ovation. Then Jessica Sanchez hit the stage to perform the band's 1975 classic, "Bohemian Rhapsody."
"I think Freddie Mercury would have been proud to hear that," Steven said. "Rock isn't your forte, but I still love your voice no matter what, and you were good today." Jennifer told Jessica, "You sounded beautiful. When it went into the more rock part of it — especially because you had your sneakers on today — I thought you were gonna be running around, we were gonna get a little bit of hair-throwing. It needed a little bit more of that rock performance." But Randy was a big fan. "I actually loved it," he said. "She changed herself from what she naturally does."
Skylar Laine was up next, singing "The Show Must Go On," and Steven thought it was an "over the top" performance. "They put a little shine on your voice, and you have such a beautiful voice and pitch anyway, it just enhanced it over the top. Oh my God, that was fabulous." Jennifer said she "got goosies" from the "powerful" performance. Randy said he was blown away. "That was incredible, dude," he said. "I think it's one of your best performances to date. Yo Ryan, this girl right here, she's gotta have it! It was phenomenal. She wants the finish line, and I love it."
Soul man Joshua Ledet followed with "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," and earned a standing ovation. "That was unbelievable," Randy said. "Vocals, four checks; performance, four checks; character, charisma, four checks. Dude, you are so ready!" Jennifer said, "I love all the singers in the competition. It's not only an inspired vocal but a great performance on top of it; it's just a surprise every single time." Steven told Joshua that he "sounds like nobody else," adding that Freddie would "love the way you did the two-step."
Elise Testone picked "I Want It All" for her Queen song, and Steven said she found her stride. "You sang that like the classical song it was, if not even better. I really enjoyed that, that was over the top." Jennifer told her, "To me that was you in your element. It was natural, it was sexy, it had everything. You look great, you sounded great . . . the whole thing just came together on that one for you." Randy was also impressed. "That was unbelievable as well, that style of song was so right for you. Brilliant!" he said. "Man, to me, that was one of your best performances to date."
Phillip chose Queen's "Fat Bottomed Girls," and Steven joked, "I guess it only goes to prove, fat bottomed girls: the bigger the cushion . . . the bigger the cushion." Jennifer also quipped, "Why you looking at me?" but Steven didn't want to go there. In all seriousness, Steven told Phillip that he loves watching him sing, adding that he has "character that nobody else has." Jennifer noted that even though everyone compares Phillip to Dave Matthews, that performance was "something totally different." Randy liked it, but he said he wasn't "jumping up and down."
Finally, Hollie concluded the first round with "Save Me," and Steven thought she "did a really good job with it." Jennifer thought it went "off" a little bit when she got emotional in the middle. "I want to see you enjoy it more . . . just be up there having a good time, connecting to the parts you love about it," she advised. Randy thought it was "solid," but he urged Hollie to "take more chances" if she wants to have a moment.
At the end of round one, Jennifer declared Skylar the winner; Randy agreed, but he also liked Joshua and Elise. Randy thought Hollie needed to step it up, but Steven liked her performance and Skylar's the most.
For round two, the contestants were able to select songs of their own choice, so Jessica picked Luther Vandross' "Dance With My Father" in honor of her dad, who is about to be deployed to Singapore. Jennifer said that Luther is one of her favorite singers ever and said, "That may have been the best I've ever heard that song sang." Steven said her voice "touches on Whitney, but you've got your own thing going on." Randy was "amazed" by Jessica and all the talent this year. "You are truly amazing to me, you're so natural," he told Jessica.
Skylar sang Jason Aldean's "Tattoos on This Town," and Randy declared himself a "ginormous fan." "You are fearless, you go after notes, you're like, 'Dude, I'm gonna have fun up here!' Another great performance." Jennifer said she initially wondered if the song was going to be a "wow" moment for Skylar, but she told her that she did hit her stride by the end and "took us there again." Steven told Skylar that she "didn't take the song where you've taken every other song, I kinda missed that in the flair, but you can do no wrong." He also advised her to "be careful to find songs that take your voice to that place."
Joshua Ledet sang India.Arie's "Ready for Love," and earned yet ANOTHER standing ovation (his 12th!). "Yo, I don't even know what to say anymore, I'm just so speechless," Randy told him. "You're so spot-on." Jennifer was also nearly speechless: "That was transcendent. The minute you start singing, everybody is right there with you. It's such a gift." And Steven said he could "smell the finish line" for Joshua.
Elise Testone sang Jimi Hendrix's "Bold as Love," and Steven wasn't sure about the song choice
"I love the Janis Joplin about you, always have, and you touched my heart with a Jimi Hendrix song, but you gotta do songs that people know. You can't pick the cherries with your back to the tree." Jennifer thought she "slayed that song so hard" that the song choice didn't even matter, but Randy agreed with Steven that it wasn't the right song for this time in the competition. "I felt like you kind of attacked the song, I did not love that," he said.
After all the Dave Matthews comparisons this season, Phillip Phillips finally sang a Dave Matthews song, "The Stone." Steven called it "very entertaining, very off the wall, typical Phillip Phillips." But Jennifer thought was "a little bit obscure, a little bit too artsy at this point in the comp," noting that she feared he could end up like Colton. "You need to do stuff to get you on that last show so you can win," she added. Randy disagreed with Jennifer. "I loved that you showed this artist side. I'm a musician, that speaks to me 100 million percent." Ryan's girlfriend, actress-dancer Julianne Hough, also swooned over "yummy" Phillip — but Phillip told Ryan he's not out to steal his girl.
Finally, Hollie closed the show with Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" (which she also sang in auditions) and earned a standing ovation. "Yo, now that's the Hollie we love. Hollie is back, Ryan!" Randy shouted. Jennifer said she stepped it up, adding, "It was perfect, the emotion, the notes, the belting." Steven agreed, saying that the performance was "so beautiful."
Jennifer thought everybody had at least one good performance, so who's going home? You'll find out Thursday night, when Katy Perry and last year's finalist Stefano Langone perform!
