I knew we were going to be in for a crazy night. Strange and exciting things happen after a Lady Gaga visit. The show opened with exciting news...another new voting record! Almost 72 million votes were called in, texted, and submitted online Wednesday night, which is 12 million more than last week's record. This was the highest number of votes cast at this stage of the competition ever!
It was a night of country duets that began with the boys--Scotty McCreery and James Durbin--to Brad Paisley & Keith Urban's "Start A Band." Apparently it was take your 4th grader to work day, as a bunch of kids were sitting on the edge of the judges platform, some with pretend instruments. James found his fiance Heidi in the audience and went in for a kiss mid-song. We found out later that the coordination was off and Heidi's nose got his eye.
Then, the top two girls--Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart--got sassy with "Gunpowder And Lead" by Miranda Lambert. They harmonize really well together, and I hope to see this performance on tour.
The Top 4 got to talk to their loved ones this week. James sang the ABCs with his baby and wife, Lauren's brother had to explain why he got her dogs shaved, Scotty caught up with his sister, and Haley chatted with her parents.
Ryan Seacrest joined the Top 4 and announced the first finalist in the Top 3 is "The Pride of [pause]..." he always calls Scotty The Pride of Garner, but it was The Pride of Rossville...Lauren Alaina! For this occasion, the stools were spray painted gold, and Lauren grabbed a seat and became very emotional.
We saw footage of Lady Gaga performing "You
And I," and she looked pretty "everyday" with her hair and makeup. Then the camera panned out and revealed her outfit, or lack thereof.
It's pretty much a pop requirement to collaborate with Pitbull these days, and the next guest was one such star--Enrique Iglesias! He performed "Dirty Dancer" and "I Like It," and it was a party with him dancing in the audience pit and giant pink balloons were bounced around. In the next segment, Ryan was in the process of introducing the music video of the week, and a giant balloon descended on him. He spiked the balloon and landed with it in the audience. Leave volleyball to the tall folks, Ryan!
Season 6's American Idol, Jordin Sparks, returned to the Idol stage to perform her new single, "I Am Woman." Boy is she a woman now! She has grown from a 16-year-old to a 21-year-old, and who knew she could dance that well?! Casey Abrams gave his cheer of approval from the audience, where he's now a permanent fixture.
Steven Tyler debuted his music video for his single, "(It) Feels So Good," on the show, which was very entertaining, but the suspense of the results was killing me!
Ryan revealed that there will be two girls in the Top 3--Haley Reinhart is joining Lauren on the gold stools. Wow! These have been the only two girls since Top 8 week and they've endured. Joining them in the Top 3 was Scotty McCreery. That means James Durbin was eliminated in fourth place.
The results were pretty shocking, but let's not forget some of the amazing fourth place Idol alumni: Tamyra Gray, LaKisha Jones, Allison Iraheta, and of course Chris Daughtry! I'm sure James will be just fine, and I'm sure he'll put on an awesome show on tour this summer with the Top 11.
Okay, it's down to Lauren, Haley, and Scotty...place your Idol finale predictions in the forums.
In the words of Ryan Seacrest at the end of last night's show, "Goodnight, all y'all!"
