In the spirit of movie week, the idols sang "Maniac" from "Flashdance." The results night kicked off with an announcement about the summer 2009 tour and a reminder that the judges' "save" must be used within the next two weeks or it will expire. The Top 7 contestants performed the "Flashdance" tune "Maniac," but chose to leave their leotards at home. The contestants had some fun before the results were revealed. A sharply dressed Ryan Seacrest announced that the 2009 tour is going on sale. Check out the news section for details. The 7 contestants attended their first movie premiere and were thrilled to ride in a limo. There are sure to be many more limo rides and premiere nights in these talented singers' futures. The idols joked with Allison Iraheta, who denied her crush on Zac Efron, but she couldn't stop her cheeks from turning the color of her hair!
Allison said she was honored to receive glowing reviews about her performance of "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing." Luckily for Allison, she wasn't embarassed any more in front of Efron, because America kept her in the competition another week. Ryan Seacrest asked Adam Lambert if he was offended by Simon's comparison of his performance to another movie, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Adam said he wasn't at all offended because he likes that movie, and figured it was a compliment. After some laughter from the audience and Simon, Adam found out he was safe. The contestants share a laugh before Anoop Desai finds out his fate. Despite positive reviews from the judges, Anoop fell into the bottom 3 again. Anoop Desai found himself in the bottom again and said he was a bit discouraged that he's been performing well but America isn't voting. This is also surprising since Anoop admitted there wasn't a special someone in his life after his performance. His single fans will surely be calling in next week!
Idol alum Jennifer Hudson returned to the Idol stage for the first time since her elimination! Idol alum Jennifer Hudson was back to perform on the stage for the first time since her Season 3 early exit. She sparkled as much as her dress (and her enormous engagement ring!) while peforming "If This Isn't Love." Ryan tried to get Jennifer to spill the news on when she'll be getting married, but Jennifer kept her glossy lips zipped. Kris Allen was met with mixed reviews on his performance of "Falling Slowly" and Simon couldn't help but say that Kris was "brilliant" despite what Randy said. Lil Rounds stood up with Kris Allen to receive her results and found out that America agreed with Simon, Kris was safe and Lil joined Anoop in the bottom. Lil waves to her fans on the way to the stools. Anoop and Lil wait to see who would be joining them in the bottom.
Matt Giraud and Danny Gokey find out which of them is in the bottom 3. The third seat in the bottom 3 was reserved for either Matt Giraud or Danny Gokey. If Matt was given a do-over he would have sang the song without all of the runs and riffs. Danny stood by his performance and all of the judges but Simon were pleased. Ryan revealed that Matt was in the bottom and Danny remains in the competition another week. Ryan showed Matt the way to the stools. The bottom 3 contestants were surprising to some people, but not to the judges, who thought America got it right. Ouch! Anoop gave Lil and Matt a hug before returning to safety.
Kris, Danny, and the rest of the contestants welcomed their buddy Anoop back to safety. Miley Cyrus showed her classy side with a performance of "The Climb." However, she didn't let a stunning and delicate looking dress stop her from rocking out with her band. The teen queen ruled the smoky stage. Miley may have worn an elegant dress, but she still rocked out. Feeling the music, Miley sang with her bandmates on stage.
Anoop Desai was sent back to safety and it was between Lil Rounds and Matt Giraud for elimination. Matt had the fewest number of votes and must sing for one of three more shots at redemption with the judges' "save." Lil Rounds found out she was safe, and Matt Giraud had the fewest votes. Lil gave Matt a hug before heading to safety. Lil was welcomed back to the couches with warm greetings. Matt Giraud sang for a shot at redemption from the judges.
Flashing a smile while singing, Matt gave it all he had. Matt Giraud sang for survival and wasn't afraid to work the crowd and the judges during his performance, even though they were debating his fate in front of his eyes. The idols chant "save, save" along with the audience. The judges huddled in deliberation. Would they use the save on Matt? The idols were all on edge, some of them literally standing on the edge of their seats, waiting to hear if their buddy Matt would stay in the competition.
It was unanimous- the judges used the save on Matt Giraud! American Idol history was made! The judges used their one time "save" on Matt Giraud. Matt was shocked and teary eyed upon hearing this news. He tried to run to the side of the stage but Ryan caught him before he could hide his tears. It was hard to tell that this is a competition judging by how excited the remaining 6 idols were to have Matt back. It must be worth sharing the mansion with one more body for another week. Everyone celebrated as American Idol history was made. The idols were all smiles at the thought of no one leaving the mansion this week.
Simon told the idols to enjoy the celebration while it lasts because next week is "Disco Week" and two contestants will be leaving the show. The 7 idols live happily ever after...until next week! Simon gave the show a thumbs up. The judges joined the contestants on stage after the show. Adam, Randy, and Kris share a laugh as Matt was interviewed in the background.
