American Idol is commited to reducing its impact on the environment. Since 2008, the show has taken these big steps to get greener!

Green UPS Unit: For the 2009 season, American Idol replaced the show's power generators, with Entertainment Services' new environmentally friendly Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) Unit. The UPS unit runs only when needed, replacing the show's old generator, which ran constantly. This step greatly reduces carbon emissions. The new generator, which is fueled by biodiesel, will only run if there is a power problem.

Stage Lighting: American Idol makes extensive use of LED lights on its set. LED lights consume less energy, run cooler and last longer than traditional lights. Plus, over 1/3 of the lighting instruments on American Idol are LED, more than any other series on television today.

Solar 4R Schools: The American Idol 2008 finale red carpet was powered by green energy, including a solar-electric system that was placed on the red carpet. With the support of the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, FOX has partnered with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) and E-Village Solar to donate a solar-electric system similar to the one used to power the red carpet at the 2008 American Idol finale to Camino Nuevo Charter Academy. This solar system is housed on the roof of the school and will generate clean energy for the next 25+ years.

American Idol 2009 Finale: This year's American Idol finale show will be powered by green power, including wind and solar energy from LADWP and biodiesel powered production generators. The American Idol 2008 finale was also powered by green power.

American Idol 2009 Finale Party: For the 2009 American Idol finale party we are placing an emphasis on sustainability. Most of the lighting used during the party will be LED lights, which consume significantly less energy than traditional lighting. We are re-using items from the American Idol Top 13 party, including turning the step and repeat banner into pillows. In addition, the party caterers will be serving locally grown and organic food.
