Atlanta was established in 1837 where two railroad lines met. The city grew quickly and by 1860 Atlanta's population had grown to 9, 554 people. Atlanta played an integral part during the Civil War as it was the nexus of many railroads and was used for the distribution of military supplies to the Confederate Army. Atlanta and the surrounding area were home to many Civil War battles, the most devastating being the Battle of Atlanta which lasted four months and led to the city being burned. Only the city's churches and hospitals were spared. Atlanta was gradually rebuilt after the burning and became a organizing center of the Civil Rights Movement under Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ralph David Abernathy.

It's really easy to get around Atlanta as the city is the main transportation hub of the Southeastern United States. Atlanta's airport, the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has been the world's busiest airport for over 10 years. Atlanta's Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority can get you everywhere you need to go in the city and provides transportation in the form of buses and heavy rail. Atlanta's subway system is the eighth busiest in the country.
There is a lot to see in the seventh-most visited city in the United States. Atlanta is home to the Georgia Aquarium, the largest indoor aquarium. The city also is home to the Martin Luther Kind, Jr. National Historic site. Atlanta has become one a national center of the arts and is one of the few cities in the United States with permanent, professional, resident companies in all performing arts disciplines including opera, ballet, music and theater. You can also catch some major sports games in Atlanta as it is home to the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association and the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League.
