Jonah Moananu

When did you first start to sing?

I’ve been singing since I could speak. It’s my parents fault. Thanks, Mom and Dad.

Do you have any formal singing training?

No.

What other talents do you have?

I freestyle rap, which is rapping off the top of your head. I am currently Hawaii’s emcee battle champion. I can also beat box. Make beats with my mouth, stuff like that.

If you don’t make it on AMERICAN IDOL, what will you do?

Hopefully being on the show will help boost my popularity enough that I could land a job entertaining back home. But we’ll just have to wait and see.

What are your personal goals in life?

I plan to get married in 2 or 3 years. Which also means that another goal would be being financially well off before that. I would like to put out at least one full album. I would also like to travel a bit before having kids. Oh yeah, I would like eventually like to have a Chevy Tahoe, my own house and a beagle hound.

What album would your friends be surprised you own?

One that I actually bought and didn’t burn.

What is the first CD you ever bought?

The first CD that I ever bought with my own money was Boyz II Men’s third album, “Evolution”. Then the second CD that I ever bought was their second CD “II”. And the third one I ever bought was. . . that’s right, you guessed it, “Cooley High Harmony,” Boys II Men’s first album.

What is in your CD player right now?

Right now I am listening to the Black Eyed Peas, American Idol 2: Greatest Moments, DJ Green Lantern’s 2PAC mix-tape, Boo Yaa Tribe’s “West Coasta Nostra,” Carl Thomas, Sean Paul, N*Sync. As you can tell, we don’t discriminate, I listen to it all.

Who is your AMERICAN IDOL?

I don’t like to idolize people, because we are all people, but someone I look up to a whole lot would have to be members of my family. My dad, mom, even my brother and sister.

What is your favorite type of music?

Hip hop/R&B, reggae, rap, whatever’s clever.

What is your favorite song to sing?

I sing whatever. It depends on how I’m feeling. Sometimes something slow, or sometimes I rap or beat box.

Favorite male pop artist?

Justin Timberlake. Don’t tell any one.

Favorite female pop artist?

Christina Aguilera, cause she’s Dirty.

Favorite album of all time?

“Marshall Mathers LP,” “Enter the DRU,” “Evolution,”“The Day.”

Who in the music world do you think your style is most like?

I think that I had a lot of different influences when it comes to music. So I think that I’m a mutt made up of styles ranging from my Dad to the Temptations to Earth Wind and Fire to Journey to Boyz II Men to Bob Marley to modern hip hop. A whole mess of things.

Most embarrassing moment?

It’s hard to say because I have such a good sense of humor. I am usually the first one to laugh at myself.

If you couldn’t sing, which talent would you most like to have?

Cooking. I would like to learn to be a chef since I like to eat.

What has been your proudest moment in life so far?

Graduating high school.
