Louisville
Home to the world-famous Kentucky Derby, Louisville knows a thing or two about competition. But visitors will soon understand why the city is equally proud of its laid back southern charm as well as the natural beauty of "River City." Steeped in history Louisville was founded in 1778 and named after King Louis XVI of France the city is both Midwestern and Southern, culturally. It's also a great place to go out on the town! Wherever you hail from, you're bound to discover that Louisville is a charming backdrop for your Season 8 audition.
Transportation
At the crossroads of the Midwest and the South, Louisville can be approached by car from a variety of locations. Flying in, you'll arrive at Standiford Field Airport, which is just five miles from downtown. If you're not driving in or renting a car from the airport, you're likely to find the TARC (Transit Authority of River City) bus system to be your friend and a "green" way to go. With over 7,000 bus stops throughout the metropolis and suburbs, it's a pretty good bet that a TARC bus can get you there without a car. Adult fare is $1.25 with senior and student discounts. The bus can even get you out to Freedom Hall at the Kentucky Exposition Center, although from Gate 4, you might still have a bit of a walk.
Sightseeing
The first thing that comes to mind for many visitors to Louisville is the thrill of Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby has taken off ever since 1875. Baseball fans may also associate the town with the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bat, manufactured here since 1884 and inspiration for its own museum. Equally impressive is the Speed Art Museum which houses art spanning 6,000 years, from ancient Egyptian to the contemporary. Along the riverfront with a number of other museums is the Muhammad Ali Center which honors the famous Louisvillian boxer. And no visit to the "River City" would be complete without a beautiful and relaxing riverboat cruise. For nighttime exploration, nothing beats the lively dining and entertainment scene over at Fourth Street Live.
