JOHN PREATOR
Age: 23
Hometown: Provo, UT
Audition City: NYC
First Concert: Beach Boys
Last Concert: Hootie and the Blowfish
When did you first start to sing?
Legend has it that at age three I could sing the entire score of H.M.S. Pinafore due to my attendance at the rehearsals of my elder siblings' junior high school production.
Do you have any formal singing training?
I received my training mostly from BYU faculty. I started taking private voice as a junior in High School from Elizabeth Farnsworth. At BYU I studied musical theatre vocal styles with Randy Boothe and Gayle Lockwood. Most recently I have been studying with Dean Kaelin in Salt Lake City.
What other talents do you have?
I have played the piano since I was seven. I love to bake goodies, and I watch movies better than anyone I know.
If you don't make it on AMERICAN IDOL, what will you do?
I'll find a wife which is what I really should be doing anyway. This is just a way to postpone that. Maybe I'll become a singing dentist.
What are your personal goals in life?
I would love to perform all my life. It's a part of my character and it makes me happy to entertain wherever I am. Most of all, though, eventually I want to get married, have a great family, a steady income and just be influential to those around me.
What album would your friends be surprised you own?
I don't think anything would surprise them about my meager collection.
What is the first CD you ever bought?
Mariah Carey's "Daydream".
What is in your CD player right now?
Kelly Clarkson's "Thankful".
Who is your AMERICAN IDOL?
Probably my parents are. They might not release a CD, but I sure like them.
What is your favorite type of music?
Anything that has a melody I can sing along with. I grew up watching the MGM musicals so I like the old standards a lot. Sinatra and Nat King Cole are awesome.
What is your favorite song to sing?
Whatever song seems to be running through my head at the moment.
Favorite male pop artist?
I like Billy Joel and Elton John a lot.
Favorite female pop artist?
Kelly Clarkson, and even though she's crossover I like Faith Hill a lot too.
Favorite album of all time?
As Randy would say Kelly, Kelly, KELLY…(Have we figured out yet that I like her?)
Who in the music world do you think your style is most like?
I like the heftier singers like Elton John and Michael Bolton.
Most embarrassing moment?
When I was waiting tables in Jackson Hole, I spilled dark red cranberry salad dressing on some man's expensive white slacks. Watching my (female) boss try to scrub the stain off of his thigh was pretty bad too.
If you couldn't sing, which talent would you most like to have?
I'd be a star quarterback.
What has been your proudest moment in life so far?
Definitely working for 2 years with the Brazilian people during my mission to Rio de Janeiro.
What is your definition of an AMERICAN IDOL?
Somebody with talent, charisma, charm, integrity and as Simon would say "the X-Factor."
Why do you want to be an AMERICAN IDOL?
Because it's what I love to do only on a huge scale! I've watched the show for 2 years, loved it, and I think it would be an amazing experience.
Who is your favorite judge and why?
I'm not getting suckered into this question. I love them all THE SAME.
Who is your least favorite judge and why?
Ditto here. (I really do like all three)
What advice do you have for other hopefuls?
Just believe in yourself. Not every audition goes our way as performers, but there are always more auditions to come. Learn what you can when you can and always strive to improve.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I speak Portuguese fluently.
